defcon4 participates in BOINC. Lemmings, lets join the masses and unite!

defcon4 defcon4 server has been upgraded for MythTV capabilities, but that is not all. We are now using an Intel Core Duo 2 1.86Ghz processor, but not much of the processor is being used. We have decided to use BOINC and participate in folding for SETI and the World Community Grid.
After looking at the cacti graph and running top, we noticed that the processor isn't being used at all. Since all the hardware encoding and raid calculations are done via hardware, the processor is freed up and isn't being used much at all. BOINC is a client based app that is runned on multiple platform. You can carve how much processor, hard drive space, and memory to allocate to different projects. By doing so, BOINC calculates scientific data from projects that you join. Computers all over the world join to share their processors to calculate data when they are idle or not in use.

Installing BOINC and participating for the ever popular SETI@home and the World Community Grid, about 66% of both processors will be calculating information 24/7 for both of these projects. By allocating the memory and cpu usage for both of these projects, it doesn't affect the overall performance of the server and we are doing something and giving back to the community. Maybe we will be part of finding a cure for cancer/aids, or new DNA structures, to finding intelligent life outside of the earth. Don't think I'm crazy, but how cool would that be? It's really not hurting us at all, this server is running 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. Might as well make it do some more and make a difference in our life.

Hundreds of thousands of people participate in BOINC and the projects that piggy back off this client if not more. If your computer is running constantly, you might want to donate the processing time to organizations that are trying to make a difference.
