Planned server maintenance
Monday, June 04, 2007

defcon4 So the other day, was watching TV and noticed that the 4U box that is sitting under my TV was louder than usual. This box, is the server that runs MythTV, website, and everything else. Generally it's been built to be pretty quiet, it's nearly silent, adjusted the fans to a lower RPM, the default exhaust fans made the box whine like a crying baby. I started to hear one of the fans failing and it was bothering me, so I decided not to be lazy and did a planned maintenance which brought down everything for about 20 minutes.
After opening the case (server cases are much easier to open when the server is powered on) and trying to pinpoint where that fan that was about to fail led me to the video card fan. It sounded like a dying cat, the bearings were probably shot. So I powered down the server and pulled out the video card. Sure enough the fan did feel a little gritty. I didn't want to take any more time, to take the fan out and give it the proper lubricating oils, not that it will fix it, so I just disconnected the power connector. The video card is now running purely on the heatsink to cool itself (probably not a good idea). Well if the video card burns out, time to get another one, and hopefully one that is rated to be fanless with the same specifications that I need to playback television. Powered the server back on, and it was back to its silent state.

Had to reboot one more time after the initial power on because it loaded a kernel that I didn't want to. Which reminds me, I have to upgrade to the latest kernel to tinker with Xen.

Plus it gave me a good test of how the services were brought back including starting mythtv-frontend by itself. Worked like a charm.

Yay.
